Students living away from home often face difficulties in managing their finances effectively, leading to overspending and financial stress. The lack of a simple, intuitive, and automated budgeting system results in poor financial planning and difficulty in tracking expenses. Our goal is to design a user-friendly solution that helps students effortlessly track their spending, set budgets, and build financial discipline.

Research
To understand the financial struggles of students living away from home, I conducted user interviews and secondary research. The insights revealed that most students lack structured budgeting habits and struggle to track small but frequent expenses. They need a simple, automated solution that provides real-time spending insights.
Competitor Analysis
Market Gap
A detailed study of existing budgeting apps like Walnut, Mint, and Goodbudget revealed significant gaps in their usability for students. While these apps provide a range of budgeting tools, they are often designed for a general audience, making them overwhelming for students who are new to financial management. Many of these apps rely heavily on manual data entry, which can feel tedious and discouraging over time, leading to inconsistent usage. Additionally, they lack personalized guidance, which is crucial for students who may not have prior experience in budgeting or financial tracking.
Through extensive research, it became evident that while there are several budgeting solutions available, they fail to address the unique needs of students. Most existing apps focus on long-term financial planning, savings, and investments, whereas students primarily need a real-time, simplified approach for managing their daily expenses. Many students struggle with impulse spending and untracked transactions, making it essential for a budgeting solution to offer automated categorization, spending insights, and intuitive reminders. This gap in the market presents an opportunity to create a student-friendly, guided financial tracking system that prioritizes ease of use, real-time tracking, and practical budgeting strategies.
Key Insights
Students need a budgeting tool that is quick, intuitive, and requires minimal effort.
• Automated expense categorization can significantly reduce manual tracking efforts.
• A simple, gamified approach to saving can make budgeting engaging for students.
User Research
Through surveys and interviews, I gathered insights from students who struggle with financial management. Key findings include:
• 80% of students rely on monthly allowances but lack a structured tracking method.
• 65% forget to log small transactions, leading to untracked overspending.
• 72% prefer a mobile-first solution with automated tracking.
